This will be a dual-delegate committee.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Topic A: Addressing Strategic Competition and Resource Tensions in the Arctic Region
As climate change accelerates ice melt, the Arctic is emerging as a contested region where territorial claims, navigation rights, and resource exploitation overlap. Oil and gas reserves, once inaccessible, are increasingly within reach, spurring competition between NATO members and rival powers such as Russia. The militarization of the Arctic, through submarine patrols, military bases, and surveillance systems, raises questions about how NATO can maintain stability without escalating tensions. This committee must consider the Arctic not just as an environmental frontier but as a strategic domain where security, sovereignty, and energy interests collide.
Topic B: Modernizing NATO’s Strategic Posture in the Indo-Pacific Region
Although traditionally oriented toward the North Atlantic, NATO has gradually deepened its engagement in the Indo-Pacific, recognizing that global security challenges transcend geography. The rise of China as a major power, maritime disputes in the South China Sea, and the need to secure critical trade routes have all prompted calls for a more robust NATO posture in this region. This debate raises difficult questions about mandate expansion, resource allocation, and the risk of overstretch. Delegates will need to explore how NATO balances its original Euro-Atlantic identity with the realities of a multipolar world, and whether the alliance can credibly project stability in the Indo-Pacific without diluting its core commitments.
